JR East is building two new types of emu for operation on lines in the Tokyo area. In the meantime, the railway is continuing to develop its new AC train. East Japan Railway (JR East) has been testing its advanced commuter (AC) prototype train since 2002 (IRJ May 2002 p20) which it hopes will form the basis for a new generation of commuter trains. However, JR East believes more time is needed to develop some of the technical innovations on the AC train. In January, JR East decided to build a second prototype to conduct endurance trials and to test passenger reaction. The new train will be tested on the Keiyo Line linking Tokyo with the Chiba area.
