Supported by good weather, Thailand's cane production was higher-than-expected at a record 93 million tonnes, prompting the extension of its current 2010/11 sugar crushing season by a month to the end of May, according to a senior official. Prasert Tapaneeyangkul, Secretary-General of the Office of Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB), told Reuters the cane output should give record sugar production of around 9.45 million tonnes, 38% above the previous forecast of 6.8 million tonnes made at the start of the crushing season last November. "Since we have plenty of cane this year, the crushing season will end in May instead of April," Mr Prasert said.
