The first computer software was open source, not commercial. Companies, developers, and computer vendors actually gave away software. Their goal was to make it easier for companies to get their computers working. Over time, companies and vendors realized that software was valuable, expensive to build and support, and represented a potential sales, service, and maintenance opportunity for vendors. Commercial software from vendors such as IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, and others is both better known and more widely used than open-source software today, particularly on System i.
