摘要

As the proportion of trips made by bicycle continues to increase, transportation and planning agencies are looking for ways to better accommodate bicycles within the urban transportation network. While bicycle lanes are usually the bicycle facility of choice, many roadways are not wide enough to accommodate bicyclists in a separate lane. As a result, bicycle lanes are often not continuous through street sections where the roadway narrows. In the 1990s, Denver, Colorado, USA began installing shared lane markings in outer roadway lanes as a way to guide bicyclists to the preferred lateral position in the lane and to alert motorists of the potential presence of bicyclists.~1
