The Connected Vehicle program is a multimodal initiative of the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) to enable safe, interoperable communications among vehicles, infrastructure, and personal communications devices on a wireless network. THE U.S. DOT'S RESEARCH AND Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) Intelligent Transportation System Joint Program Office (ITS JPO) has advanced connected vehicle research this year by defining its potential applications, the concept of operations (ConOps), and the architecture needed to support them. ITS JPO is ensuring that ITE members as stakeholders at every level continue to have an opportunity to help inform the potential direction of connected vehicle implementation, using public meetings and the ITE task force meetings to seek input and offer review and critique. Building off of the 2010 ITE Journal ai-ticle detailing the ITE task force and its perspectives on connected vehicles' potential benefits and opportunities, this feature examines the technology being put in place to make the connected vehicle environment a reality.
