European restrictions on the quantity of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) that passengers can take on flights as carry-on luggage are finally due to be eased - after more than one false start. A new European Commission (EC) regulation was published in the Official Journal of the EU on 20 March 2013. From 31 January 2014 onwards, the existing restrictions on LAGs - a source of so much passenger inconvenience and operational complexity - will be eased in in phases. Passengers in transit in the EU will be able to keep liquids purchased in secure zones of airports (in shops located beyond security controls) or on board aircraft, and placed in sealed bags. Restrictions will also be lifted on liquids used for medical purposes or special diets, particularly baby food.
