Cyber security has moved from the periphery to the centre of military operations, with implications for everything from propaganda to the battlefield itself, according to Bryan Lillie, chief technology officer for QinetiQ's cyber security division. Until recently, cyber security in the defence sector was seen as applying to "a box on the side", Lillie told IHS Jane's. However, the scope is now much broader, with both sides in any combat deploying cyber technology to achieve their aims. "What we've seen is that where we used to have a box on the side, with a very thin stripe of a cyber team... now cyber is becoming part of lots of different things," he said.
