Tokyo plans to boost exports of materiel into Asia to grow a network of "like-minded countries" friendly towards its goals in the region, a senior Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) official said on 18 January. Speaking at a conference in Singapore under the Chatham House Rule, the official described this strategy as having slowly taken shape only in the last two years, after Tokyo eased its long-standing and self-imposed ban on international sales of military items.
