John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has unveiled a proposal that would dramatically increase national defence spending over the next five years. The scheme offers a potential blueprint as the new Congress considers possible increases in defence spending. A Republican-controlled Congress could work with President Donald Trump to repeal current budget limits, mandated by the 2011 Budget Control Act (BCA), and seek to invest heavily in the US military, which McCain and Trump have called for. Roadblocks to doing so remain, as fiscally conservative Republicans and Democrats who want more domestic spending or government revenues could derail a higher defence budget.
