A new plan to defeat the Islamic State group has been delivered to members of the National Security Council's Principals Committee, with Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis briefing the committee on 27 February, a Department of Defense (DoD) spokesman told assembled press. The classified plan was developed in response to an executive order from President Donald Trump, requesting that Mattis lead a 30-day review of potential options to accelerate the campaign against the Islamic State. Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis described the plan as a "preliminary" framework designed to help the decision-making process for the president on how he might change existing plans.
