Tensions are increasing between the various factions fighting in northern Syria as Turkey looks for a way to involve itself in the offensive against the Islamic State-held city Al-Raqqah and marginalise the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The complexity of the current situation in northern Syria was highlighted during a 1 March press briefing by Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend, commander of the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State.
