The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) would like to fulfil its heavy transport helicopter requirement as soon as possible and with the highest number of helicopters that can be secured with the available funds, the service's chief disclosed on 11 May, effectively putting the Boeing CH-47F Extended Range (ER) Chinook ahead of the Sikorsky's CH-53K King Stallion when comparing overall programmes costs and availability. Speaking at European Air Chiefs Conference (EURAC) in Germany, Lieutenant General Karl Miillner said that, while he has no preference among the two contenders, he does want to expedite the requirement with the most readily available platform to replace the Luftwaffe's 66 ageing VFW-Fokker/Sikorsky CH-53G/GS/GA Stallion helicopters.
