The entire British Army is "20 years out of date" and the Royal Navy's (RN's) anti-submarine warfare capabilities are "inadequate", according to testimony before a parliamentary committee by three senior retired UK military officers on 14 November. The retired officers - General Richard Barrons, former commander of Joint Forces Command; Air Marshal Barry North, the former deputy Commander-in-Chief Personnel of RAF Air Command; and the former head of the RN, Admiral George Zambellas - told the House of Commons Defence Committee (HCDC) that the country's armed forces faced future funding shortfalls, emerging threats, and a legacy of underfunding that has left much of their equipment lagging behind that of potential opponents.
