A new report by the US Department of Defense's (DoD's) chief equipment tester noted ongoing deficiencies in both variants of the US Navy's (USN's) Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) programme, but takes specific aim at the Independence variant's surface self-defence capability and the aluminium trimaran's repeated equipment failures. In the 1 February report by the Director of Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E), the Pentagon's testing office wrote that, "although incomplete, the data collected to date show that many of the Independence-variant seaframe systems have significant reliability problems". Furthermore, preliminary data analyses of the navy's USS Independence (LCS 2) and USS Coronado (LCS 4) "provide sufficient evidence of numerous Independence-variant seaframe deficiencies that significantly degrade the ships' operational effectiveness and suitability".
