The Taliban struck a government compound in Gereshk, the centre of the district with the same name (the district is sometimes also referred to as Nahri Sarraj) in the southern province of Helmand, in a suicide attack that started on 9 March and ended after more than a day. Omar Zwak, the spokesman for the governor of Helmand, told IHS Jane's that approximately 10 insurgents started attacking the compound at about 06:00 local time on 9 March and that the last assailant held out until around 10:00 local time on 10 March before being killed, like the rest of the attackers. According to Zwak, four policemen died in the attack, with 12 others wounded.
