Two Embraer/Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft of the Afghan Air Force (AAF) were deployed to the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif on 7 March, a spokesman for the Afghan National Army's (ANA's) 209th Corps, responsible for the north, confirmed to IHS Jane's on 8 March. While media reports seemingly suggested that these two aircraft will be permanently deployed to the north to provide the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF) there with close air support (CAS), a statement from an AAF spokesman apparently qualified this.
