Syrian rebels began a major offensive against government forces to the south of Aleppo on 31 July with the aim of breaking the siege of the eastern part of the city. Some gains have been made, but the key military base there, formerly an artillery school, had not been overrun at the time of writing. The offensive involves more than 20 groups, most of which are operating under the auspices of the Fatah Halab Operations Room or the Islamist coalition Jaish al-Fatah.
