Authorities in New Delhi have reportedly rejected a bid by French naval shipbuilder DCNS to invest in establishing a company in India to develop and produce air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems for submarines. Media reports in India said the proposal, which features a bid by DCNS to establish a new wholly owned corporate entity, was rejected because AIP technology is already being developed by the state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The Indian government has yet to confirm the reports, while DCNS has not responded to IHS Jane's questions on the matter. However, signalling authorities' reservations about the investment proposal, the reported rejection follows two previously announced postponements on decisions about the DCNS bid.
