In October off the coasts of Scotland and west Wales the UK Royal Navy (RN) hosted the world's first large-scale demonstration of maritime unmanned systems in a series of exercises, dubbed 'Unmanned Warrior 2016' (UW16), involving more than 40 organisations and over 50 unmanned vehicles. As Stuart Eyles, head of autonomous systems at BAE Systems, told IHS Jane's, this provided BAE Systems with the opportunity to deliver a live demonstration of the latest unmanned naval technologies in its arsenal. Recent developments include a transportable command-and-control (C2) centre; a high-bandwidth, long-range tactical communication solution; and an optionally manned version of the company's Pacific-class rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB).
