The establishment of the army courts may be an intrusion by Pakistan's influential army into the country's civilian life. However, a more important question that remains unanswered is the extent to which such courts will be successful in blocking expansion of Taliban militancy beyond the movement's traditional hold over areas along the Afghan border. The end of US-led combat operations in Afghanistan in December has already created the potential for a power vacuum that has emboldened the Taliban. "For the Taliban, the closure of Afghan combat missions will only prove that they have won the war against the US in Afghanistan," said one Western diplomat in Islamabad. He added that beyond the "speedy justice" to be provided by the army courts, Pakistan needs to undertake a series of long-term reforms.
