Spanish shipbuilder Navantia announced that it had begun the process of establishing a wholly owned subsidiary in Brazil on 2 3 January. The new company, Navantia Brasil projetos Navais LTDA, will be owned 90% by Navantia and 10% by Navantia Australia. According to Navantia, negotiations to establish in Brazil began in 2013 and the move is meant to : adapt to Brazil's national defence policy, which requires foreign companies that want to participate as prime contractors to set up in Brazil. That policy specifies that foreign companies need to pair up with Brazilian companies or establish local entities if they want to compete for large defence contracts. According to the communique, Navantia joins more than 7,000 Spanish companies that have subsidiaries in Brazil generating more than 200,000 local jobs.
