France has confirmed that 7,500 military positions that were to be cut between 2015 and 2019 will now be saved as part of the reaction to the attacks in Paris in mid-January. In 20151,500 jobs will be saved and the country's six-year military programme law will be updated to enable this to take place. The French military have already lost 44,000 personnel since 2009. Approximately 8,000 further positions were to be cut in 2015 and 25,800 between 2015 and 2019. The French defence committee decided to reduce the latter number by 7,500: 1,500 fewer in 2015 and 6,000 fewer between 2016 and 2019. The cost of this has been estimated at EUR300 million (USD339 million) per year. Additionally, 250 new intelligence positions will be financed for the Direction de la Protection et de la Securite de la Defense military intelligence agency and its civilian counterpart, the Direction generale de la securite exterieure.
