President Barack Obama has decided to keep 9,800 US troops in Afghanistan throughout 2015 and then re-evaluate force levels in 2016 before seeking to largely withdraw by 2017. The announcement came after a 24 March White House meeting with Ashraf Ghani, Afghanistan's president, who specifically requested a continued US presence. The change is meant to compensate for the lengthy period it took to form an Afghan government following the 2014 elections and "to make sure that we're doing everything we can to help Afghan security forces succeed so we don't have to go back, so we don't have to respond in an emergency", according to Obama.
