The US State Department has approved the possible sale of 17 Bell-Boeing V-22B Block C Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft to Japan, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 5 May. Estimated at USD3 billion, the sale is intended to "greatly enhance the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's [JGSDF's] humanitarian and disaster relief capabilities and support amphibious operations," the DSCA notification said.
