Rafael Advanced Defense Systems took the opportunity at Paris to debut an extended-range (ER) variant of the I-Derby short-to beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile (AAM) it unveiled at Aero India in February. The new missile uses a dual-pulse solid rocket motor that extends the range of the missile from 65 km to around 100 km (assuming a 'standard' engagement at around 20,000 ft with firing and target aircraft approaching head-on at M0.9). It retains the Derby's short-range and lock-on-before launch capabilities, along with the I-Derby's software-defined radar seeker, which allows the seeker's performance parameters to be updated to address new or evolving threats. Like its predecessors, the I-Derby ER can also be employed as a surface-to-air missile as part of the Rafael Spyder short- to medium-range air defence system.
