The governor of Okinawa Prefecture in southwestern Japan has agreed to allow the relocation of a controversial US military base, delighting the US and Japanese governments but angering some local people who are deeply opposed to the scheme. Nakaima Hirokazu announced on 27 December that he was approving a landfill permit requested by Tokyo in March 2013 that will enable Marine Corps Air Station Futenma - the US Marine Corps' (USMC's) sole airbase in Okinawa - to be moved to a new site at the existing Henoko base in the island's sparsely populated northeast.
