The US Air Force (USAF) has requested funding for a new combat trainer and battle management command-and-control aircraft in fiscal year 2015 (FY 2015). Two new aircraft premiering in the FY 2015 budget request are the T-X trainer replacement and the Northrop Grumman E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS) recapitalisation effort, the USAF announced during a 4 March Pentagon budget briefing. The T-X programme would receive USD600 million over the next five years, said Major General James Martin, the USAF's budget director. He declined to comment on when a competition might open, but said that a contract could be awarded as soon as FY 2017. The entire programme is expected to be worth around USD11 billion.
