Having trained four battalions of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) under its first mandate, the European Union Training Mission in Mali (EUTM-Mali) is preparing to begin its second mandate, which will involve training another four battalions by May 2016. By then, a significant percentage of the Mali's soldiers will have been through the training. After a recruitment drive, the FAMa currently has a strength of 14,000, with the Gendarmerie and National Guard adding another 13,000. It will also mean that Mali will be able to have three of four of its comparatively elite battalions deployed in the turbulent north at any given time. This is a remarkable contrast to the situation in March 2012 when a group of junior officers overthrew the democratically elected government, while the FAMa units fighting Tuareg separatists and Islamist militants in the north collapsed. "[The Malians] are recovering their confidence and pride; they are coming back into the game," EUTM-Mali Commander General Bruno Guibert told IHS Jane's.
