Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) has officially ceded military administration of the frontline islets of Dadan and Erdan in outlying Kinmen County to local government control. Dadan, which covers an area of 0.79 km~2 and Erdan, which covers 0.28 km~2, are two of 12 islets that surround the main island of Kinmen 4 km from the Chinese city of Xiamen in Fujian Province. They had been considered "sensitive military areas" since the mid-1950s and were the site of artillery exchanges with mainland Chinese forces in 1950 and 1958.
