Iraq has taken delivery of consignments of Sukhoi Su-25 attack aircraft from both Russia and Iran, while the United States has deployed AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Baghdad International Airport. The military support coming from Russia and Iran could help Iraqi forces reverse the rapid gains made in June by a Sunni rebellion spearheaded by the radical group now known as the Islamic State. Battlefield successes will help Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki resist pressure to form a more inclusive government, which the United States has said must happen before it increases its military support.
