Germany is to promote industry consolidation in Europe, the German Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Sigmar Gabriel, announced on 19 August. Gabriel, a member of the Social Democratic Party, said the country's industry perspectives "do not depend on exports alone". "We need to talk about European consolidation, maintenance, and renewal of stocks," he said. The issue of defence jobs was also raised, with Gabriel saying that the issue of workforce security was not to influence decisions on defence export licences.
