The Islamic State's commitment to taking the northern Syrian town of Kobane has exposed the Sunni militant group to heavy casualties, but the battle is not the main focus of Operation 'Inherent Res olve', according to General Lloyd Austin, the commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM). Gen Austin told reporters on 17 October that the Islamic State, which US officials continue to refer to as ISIL, continues to "pour manpower" into its offensive against Kobane, which is being held by Syrian Kurdish forces supported by US aircraft. "If he [the Islamic State] continues to present us with major targets, as he has done in the Kobane area, then clearly, we'll service those targets, and we've done so very, very effectively here of late."
