When the UK launched Operation 'Veritas' in 2001 in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, neither it nor the US and its other coalition partners envisaged it as the start of well over a decade of conflict. What began as an operation to destroy Al-Qaeda, and the Taliban regime that supported it, morphed into much more nebulous attempt at state building. While the success of efforts to degrade Al-Qaeda's command structure and capabilities in Afghanistan are generally regarded as being successful, whether or not ISAF's broader mission will be successful is now largely out of US and UK hands. Much now depends on the ability and will Of the ANSF - now over 350,000 strong - to provide security for the areas of the country under its control, as well as the ability of Afghanistan's political leadership to provide effective governance.
