The US-led coalition against the Islamic State (also known as ISIL, for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) has "halted" the latter's momentum, the coalition's 60 nations and international organisations said after their meeting in Brussels on 3 December. At the same time the Iraqi government revealed to the coalition its plans for reuniting the country and has indicated it will turn to NATO for defence reform assistance. "It was absolutely clear from everyone [at the coalition meeting] that we have made significant progress against Daesh in the past two-and-a-half months," said US Secretary of State John Kerry, referring to the pronunciation of the ISIL acronym in Arabic. Kerry briefed reporters after the coalition meeting, which was held at NATO's headquarters.
