Syrian insurgents operating in the eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr discovered a 'Scud'-type ballistic missile facility when they captured a building constructed on the site targeted in a September 2007 Israeli air strike. The United States stated in April 2008 it had intelligence indicating that North Korea was helping to build a reactor at the site as part of a programme to produce weapons-grade plutonium. Syria denied the allegations, demolished the remains of the suspected reactor within a few weeks of the air strike, and constructed a large shed in its place.
