US Marine Corps Forces Central Command (MARCENT) is the marine component command for US Central Command (CENTCOM). Speaking to IHS Jane's, Lieutenant General Robert B Neller, MARCENT commander, described the ongoing challenges of operating in the midst of the Arab Spring, the withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the US rebalance to the Asia Pacific. Headquartered in Bahrain and comprising 400 staff, MARCENT provides support to approximately 12,000 US marines deployed within CENTCOM, inclusive of Afghanistan. "A year ago we had about 20,000 marine personnel in Afghanistan alone. Now it's just a little more than 7,000," affirmed Gen Neller. "The US military has downsized from 101,000 troops after the surge in 2009-10 to 68,000, and will continue to drawdown the marine force to the end of 2014."
