China's defence industry base has made significant gains over the past decade. The EU and US arms embargoes against Beijing - imposed following the Tiananmen Square incidents of 1989 - have provided an incentive to develop domestic industrial capabilities to meet expanding national requirements. Notable milestones include the emergence of high-profile, ostensibly indigenously developed military platforms such as combat aircraft, submarines, and main battle tanks (MBTs). However, a dependency on foreign technologies and designs masks continuing weaknesses and a requirement for further robust reform.
