A major Australian-US amphibious exercise involving more than 28,000 personnel, including a US Army airborne battle group flying non-stop from Alaska, got under way at the Shoalwater Bay Exercise Area on Australia's northeast coast on 15 July. The US contribution to the three-week biennial 'Talisman Sabre' exercise includes the six-ship USS George Washington carrier strike group, the flrst-in-class guided missile and special warfare submarine USS Ohio (SSGN-726), and eight other amphibious assault and support ships including USS Blue Ridge, the 7th Fleet's command-and-control ship.
