Panamanian authorities have asked the UN Security Council to investigate military equipment discovered aboard a North Korean-flagged vessel en route to North Korea from Cuba and charged the crew with endangering public security by illegally transporting weapons. The moves followed the 12 July interception by Panamanian authorities of Chong Chon Gan, a North Korean-flagged 36-year-old, 9,147 dwt general cargo ship, as it approached the Panama Canal from the Atlantic side. Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli said the vessel was stopped because the authorities had received a tip-off that it was carrying narcotics.
