The Russian Ministry of Defence is replacing its old ground-based, long-range radio navigation system. The Skorpion system, developed by the St Petersburg-based Russian Institute of Radio Navigation and Time, will replace Russia's Chaika transmitter chains by 2020, according to Russian newspaper Izvestia. Skorpion will serve as Russia's military geolocation system should the GLONASS and GPS satellite signals be jammed. The Chaika network was built in the 1950s; many of its stations are not functional.
