Buoyed by sustained growth in defence expenditure the military aircraft market for the GCC states has experienced a period of unusually high activity, largely as a result of the various deals finalised by Saudi Arabia in the sector. The F-15SA procurement and upgrade programme, in particular, is responsible for the rapid growth in spending on aircraft since late 2011. This boom period follows several years of lower spending on military aircraft between 2009 and 2011 as many governments in the region focused their attention on the after-effects of the global financial crisis and the unrest caused by the Arab Spring.
