The F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike fighter programme capped off a series of weapons tests last month with the first live-fire launch of a guided air-to-air missile on 30 October, according to F-35 prime contractor Lockheed Martin and US defence officials. During the latest test an F-35A conventional take- off and landing variant fired an AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile over Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) in California. That test came after three earlier air-to-surface trials, including a 29 October test in which an F-35B short take-off/vertical landing variant released a GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided munition from its internal weapons bay against a stationary tank at Edwards AFB.
