September 2013 saw the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) Merlin helicopter force celebrate 10 years of continuous commitments to operations in Bosnia (2003-2004), Iraq (2004-2009), and Afghanistan (2009-2013). Speaking to IHS Jane's, Group Captain Nigel Colman, commander of the RAF's Merlin Force and station commander at RAF Benson, said that operating in Afghanistan provided some unique challenges when compared with the helicopter force's previous mission in Iraq. "While the role was very similar and, indeed, some of the environmental aspects were as well, the key difference was the much higher-density altitude in Helmand Province and associated hot temperatures," he said. "However, we were able to mitigate this with careful management and judicious use of the Merlin during the cooler times of the day and night."
