UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials have opened negotiations with a number of aircraft leasing companies and civilian airlines to provide the Royal Air Force (RAF) with additional British Aerospace (BAe) 146-type passenger and cargo aircraft. The move has been prompted by the planned retirement in 2012 of the last nine of the RAF's Lockheed Martin C-130K Hercules transport aircraft, which is expected to leave a shortfall in RAF airlift capacity until Airbus Military A400M aircraft start being delivered in 2014.
