BAE Systems Global Combat Systems Munitions has revealed that it is developing a GPS-based precision guidance system for 81 mm mortars with General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems. Known as the 81 mm Roll Controlled Guided Mortar (RCGM), the project is believed to represent the first time preci- sion guidance has been applied to an 81 mm mortar system. It would be compatible with BAE Systems LI6-series mortars and US M252 mortars. First firings of RCGM were carried out recently at the Yuma Proving Ground in the US. Five bombs were fired, achieving a circular error of probability (CEP) of 5,4,4, 3 and 2 m at a maximum range of 2.7 km. It is expected that the range could be increased through further development.
