For Fiscal Year 2013 the US Department of Defense (DoD) is requesting USD8 billion for space-based programmes: 22 per cent less than in 2012 due to changes to or cancellation of programmes, such as the US Air Force decision to terminate the Defense Weather Satellite System in January 2012. The budget request includes USD167.4 million for research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) and procurement of the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS). The request will fund on-orbit testing of MUOS 1, the launch of which is due, and pay for preparation efforts for the launch of the second MUOS satellite in July 2013.
