BAE Systems reported a 14 per cent drop in sales for Fiscal Year 2011 (FY11) while profits rose by a quarter, with the group forecasting that improved electronics and cyber sales would help to counter stagnant UK and US spending. The group's revenues dropped by GBP3.12 billion (USD4.9 billion) to GBP19.15 billion, the group announced on 16 February. Earnings climbed by GBP269 million toGBP1.26 billion, leading to basic earnings per share of GBP0.37. BAE Systems said "little sales growth" should be expected in 2012 due to market conditions, but predicted a modest increase in earnings partly dependent on the conclusion of its sale of Typhoon multirole aircraft to Saudi Arabia under the Salam contract. "BAE Systems is operating in a difficult business environment as defence spending reduces in its largest markets: the US and UK," said the group. "These market pressures have been apparent for some time. BAE Systems has moved quickly to take strategic actions it believes necessary to sustain and position the business for the future."
