The United States is pressing India to step up its involvement in Afghanistan with proposals that include deploying an Indian military training team on the ground; a move that would doubtlessly infuriate Pakistan.Peter Lavoy, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, led a team of officials from across the US government that visited Delhi on 17 and 18 May. Indian military officials told IHS Jane's that Lavoy proposed that New Delhi play a greater strategic and military role in Afghanistan during talks.
