Algeria has agreed to support multinational military intervention in Mali after the apparent failure of its effort to split the Islamist militant groups that control the north of the neighbouring country. A US State Department official said that, during a 29 October meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika agreed to help the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) plan its deployment of a military force to help the authorities in Bamako wrest control of northern Mali from the Islamists.
