An update to Australia's Defence Capability Plan (DCP) released on 17 December provides an insight into scheduling for a number of major strategic programmes announced in the government's 2009 Defence White Paper.rnThese include: 12 large conventionally powered submarines with a land-strike capability to replace the current six-boat Collins-class fleet; next-generation surface combatants to take the place of the eight ANZAC frigates; new vehicles for the army and upgrades to its M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks (MBTs); and confirmation of the intent to purchase a fourth squadron of F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters (JSFs).
